Premier calls for help with literacy project
August 23, 2006 Edition 1
KWAZULU-Natal Premier S'bu Ndebele yesterday launched a project to eradicate illiteracy in the province, urging everyone to lend a hand in the Masifunde Adult Literacy Campaign.
Presenting a report at a sitting of the legislature in KwaNgwanase, in the far north of the province, he said the campaign would involve everyone who was willing and ready to contribute.
"The campaign will adopt the metaphoric structure of six 'brigades' as our primary form of organisation. We shall name the various brigades after deceased prominent South Africans. We still need to consult the families of these heroes and heroines before we make the names public," he said.
Because of the significance of the campaign, the provincial cabinet took a decision to name Ndebele as campaign commander.
The campaign will proceed on a stage-by-stage basis, the first beginning in September and ending in March 2007. The first stage will be concerned with gearing up, but will also target the first 40 000 illiterate adults from age 15 upwards. - Political Staff
