Cholera kills inmates

November 23, 2009 Edition 1

A cholera outbreak killed eight inmates in Kenya's largest prison outside Nairobi, the commissioner of prisons said yesterday.

"One died on Saturday while the seven others died early this morning. There is a cholera outbreak at the prison," Isaiah Osugo said.

Twenty-five others had been admitted to hospital. The illness was caused by poor sanitation and contaminated drinking water at the prison, he said.

Cholera has a short incubation and can be fatal if not treated in time. - Sapa-AFP
