Say sorry, newspaper told

July 30, 2008 Edition 1

JOHANNESBURG: The Sunday Sun was disparaging of homosexuals in publishing Jon Qwelane's column headlined "Call me names, but gay is NOT okay" in its July 20 issue, the press ombudsman has found.

Ombudsman Joe Thloloe had received nearly 1 000 complaints against the Sunday Sun for publishing the column, he said yesterday.

He found that the newspaper had contravened the press code and ordered it to publish an appropriate apology.

Thloloe found that, to the credit of the Sunday Sun, it had responded to the outcry by printing a page of readers' letters condemning Qwelane and the newspaper.

However, he observed that "it still fell short of apologising".

The Sunday Sun could not be reached for comment. - Sapa
