January 05, 2009 Edition 2

YANGON: Myanmar's pro-democracy party marked the 61st anniversary of the country's independence from Great Britain yesterday, saying it foresaw no hope for the military-ruled country.

Party chairman Aung Shwe called for the release of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and other party leaders.

Aung Shwe said national unity was in disarray, and there was "no harmony between the government and the governed". - Sapa-AP
