No Giro in 2010

There will be no Giro del Capo in 2010.This announcement was made by David Bellairs, co-director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of the stage race. "It is a sad day for SA cycling and it is a sad day for me,"said Bellairs. "I pursued all available avenues in the hope of securing a sponsor, but to no avail." But Bellairs was confident that this would not be the last of the race. "Watch this space. The Giro will be back on the international calender in 2011," he said. - Sapa

Seve accolade

LONDON: Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros yesterday accepted an honorary membership of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. Life ban for Ayhan

BERNE: Turkish middle-distance runner Sureyya Ayhan, a former European 1 500m champion, has been given a life ban for doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after losing an appeal. CAS, sport's highest tribunal, said Ayhan had tested positive for stanozolol and methandienone metabolites in an out-of-competition control in September 2007, having previously violated anti-doping rules in 2004. - Reuters

Teen gets F1 chance

LONDON: Italian teenager Mirko Bortolotti will test with the Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso Formula One team in Spain next month after impressive drives in this year's F2 feeder series. It will be the second F1 outing for the 19-year-old, who also tested for then-champions Ferrari at the end of 2008 after he won the Italian F3 title. - Reuters
