Fears over bridges

LONDON: Police and army experts say they're urgently checking the safety of 1 800 bridges in northern England amid some of the worst storms recorded in Britain.
Heavy rainfall has ravaged England's popular Lake District.
Police said yesterday that concerns over the safety of bridges had crippled the region's road network after a record 314.4mm of rain fell over Cumbria in 24 hours.
In Ireland, unprecedented showers left large parts of the south and west submerged and thousands of people in Cork, Ireland's second city, without drinking water - Sapa-AP
