£3m Anglo-Saxon treasure for sale

November 27, 2009 Edition 1

The British Museum says that a huge haul of Anglo-Saxon gold found this year by an unemployed amateur treasure-hunter has been valued at £3.285 million (R41m).

The discovery of the gold and silver artefacts in a field in Staffordshire sent a thrill through Britain's archaeo- logical community.

The 1 500-piece haul is the largest Anglo-Saxon treasure trove yet found.

Whoever buys it will pay the finder and the owner of the field in which it was found. Two museums hope to buy it jointly. - Sapa-AP
