Burma court to hear Suu Kyi appeal

December 22, 2009 Edition 2

YANGON: Burma/Myanmar's supreme court agreed yesterday to hear an appeal against the house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was sentenced in August to a further 18 months in detention for breaking a security law.

The Nobel laureate was sentenced to three years in prison last August for allowing an American intruder to stay at her lakeside residence for two nights.

The court said that broke a law protecting the army-ruled state from "subversive elements" and breached the terms of her house arrest. - Reuters
